The Complete Works: based on the work of bpNichol (2016) PG
Sun May 27, 2 pm
Fifteen years in the making, The Complete Works adapts the creations of internationally acclaimed avant-garde poet bpNichol. From comic book detective stories and westerns to documentaries and magic realism; from hand-drawn animation to computer-generated images, The Complete Works wrestles Nichol’s writing off the page and projects it onto the screen. It uses bpNichol’s poetic methods on Nichol himself to create a film that is subversive, entertaining and visually arresting.
Josiah: The Story that Sparked the Civil War (2017) PG
Sun Jun 10, 2 pm
Did you know that Josiah Henson, who was Harriet Beecher Stowe's totally inaccurate inspiration for her book Uncle Tom's Cabin, eventually escaped to Canada and devoted his life to helping other slave escapees? Come see this stunning documentary about one of the most misunderstood and undeservedly obscure men in American (and Canadian) history.
Tickling Giants (2017) PG
Wed Jun 20, 6 pm
This daring documentary tells the story of Dr. Bassem Youssef, the "Egyptian Jon Stewart", who leaves his job as a heart surgeon and becomes a late-night comedian, whose television show at its peak was watched by almost half of his country’s population. The movie is about how he finds creative, non-violent ways to protect free speech and fight a dictatorial president who abuses his power.
